Juicing vs Smoothies

Updated: Jul 24, 2020

We all know eating fruits and vegetables are good for us, but we often don’t eat the required amount of fruits and vegetables that we should take in on a daily basis. Drinking a juice or a smoothie are two ways to get the recommended amount. So what’s the difference?

First let’s start with how they are the same. Both juices and smoothies contain a large amount of fruits and vegetables. Another way they are the same is that they taste good (depending on the recipe). And the last and most important way they are similar is both are an easy way to take in the healthiest foods on earth so we can nourish our bodies and get most of the vitamins and minerals we need to thrive.

There are some differences between the two. First juices contain mostly vegetables. The juice, while extremely nutritious also does not contain the whole plant so a lot of fiber is removed with the juicing process. According to the Gerson Diet, the nutrition nourishes our cells within about 15 minutes and helps our bodies to detox. This helps to energize us and when our bodies are nourished, we feel good and don’t need to eat as much. Juicing is also considered a, 'Raw' food. According to the Hippocrates Institute, raw foods contain the most nutrients because they have not been processed. Juicing is a bit different. It is slightly processed. This means it is mostly in a natural state.

Smoothies on the other hand, contain a lot of fruits. Fruits are also nutritious and another bonus is that they taste amazing. Since they contain the whole fruit, smoothies have a lot of fiber. Since smoothies are mostly fruit, they have a lot of natural sugar. This may not be good for everyone, so be sure to check with your doctor.

Both juices and smoothies have a purpose. To make each a bit more inclusive, some people add a some fruit to their juices and some add a few vegetables to their smoothies. The Gerson Diet allows an apple and a lemon to be added to their juicing protocol. Many people think juicing is good for our bodies, but others think eating the whole vegetable is better. This is true, but if juicing is the only way to get in the needed nutrition, then I say, “Drink up!”.

Smoothies, in contrast, are probably better when drank in moderation, especially if you have certain health issues. According to Hippocrates, we should only eat about 1 piece of fruit a day, and that fruit should be ripe. Fruit has a lot of natural sugar which could be problematic for some people. The good news is smoothies add a lot of fiber to your diet. Our bodies love fiber and it is necessary for gut health. So as long as you don’t go overboard, enjoy a smoothie for breakfast, lunch, or as an after dinner snack.

To try and make my diet as complete as possible I have a 32oz juice daily and a 320z smoothie. This is the best way for me to know I’m getting plenty of vitamins, minerals, and fiber in my diet.
